Public Service 2008-2009
Committee Chair: Aimee Shultz • aims385@yahoo.com

This year we have several opportunities for public service offered through Ad Fed. We will be creating a brand awareness campaign for Catholic Charities, re-branding the Big Buddy Program of Baton Rouge, and collecting books for the Books for Kids Foundation. Please let me know if you'd like to assist in any or all of these projects. These are all great opportunities that will challenge our skills and help out our community, so do your part!

To find out more info on any of the following opportunities, please contact Aimee Shultz at aims385@yahoo.com.

Baton Rouge Big Buddy Program - Rebranding

We have the opportunity to re-brand Baton Rouge's Big Buddy Program! This is such an exciting challenge as they are completely open to a new look. The possibilities of how we can help Big Buddy are endless! The program is celebrating its 30th Anniversary and needs an updated image. Please contact me (Aimee Shultz) if you are interested in helping with this campaign. We are open to any and all ideas, so please share!

Baton Rouge Big Buddy Program - Day of the Mentor

The Big Buddy Program is hosting an event on October 31st, 2008 called Day of the Mentor. Professionals will take a child to work for half a day. The morning begins at the Big Buddy office where professionals and children will have a breakfast, then you proceed to work for half a day, letting the child experience a day in the life of [insert your job title here]! After the half day of work is over, you meet back at the Big Buddy office for a quick bite to eat at lunch.

The Day of the Mentor allows these children to see different types of jobs that are out there and is yet another great effort put on by Big Buddy to (in the long run) keep these children off the streets and focused on doing well in school.

If you or your company is interested in hosting a child for half a day, please contact Aimee Shultz. Each professional can host one child, but if your company can only send one professional to pick up the children, you can request to have as many as you can take. Also, if the breakfast or lunch does not fit into your schedule, let Aimee know and the program will work with you to get the children there. They will not turn any volunteers away.

A list of all participating Ad Fed professionals will be collected by Aimee and sent to the Big Buddy Program.

LOOKING FOR AD FED PROFESSIONALS TO SPEAK TO CLASSES

As an effort to make children and teenagers more aware of the marketing and advertising professions, we'd like to put YOU in the classroom. Don't worry-it's only for a few minutes! If you are interested in speaking to a class about your profession, email Aimee Shultz. More details to come at a later date.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES

Catholic Charities has programs open to the whole community, regardless of what religion you are. These programs include: foster grandparents, maternity programs, single parent programs, etc. This organization wants to reach young adults through age 35. They want to promote advocacy as well as telling about how poverty affects each of us. For this project, we are starting with a blank canvas. Carol, the marketing director, is open to any and all ideas we have to get the word out about their organization's mission. However, Carol is really excited about grassroots/guerilla marketing. Carol also has a tv show that airs on Channel 4-it's in dire need of a new backdrop.

If you're interested in helping with this project, please let me know. Let's get together and brainstorm ideas as to how we can help out Catholic Charities.

BOOKS FOR KIDS FOUNDATION

Help the AAF Collect 5,000 NEW Books

October 27-18

Ad Fed BR’s Goal: We’re aiming at reaching the goal of one book per member!

In the spirit of its commitment to education, the American Advertising Federation will hold a three-week nationwide book drive to promote literacy among disadvantaged children and youth. The drive will be held in conjunction with the Books for Kids Foundation. The new public service project demonstrates the advertising industry's comprehensive understanding of corporate responsibility and the value and vital importance of education.

They are asking for books that are within the reading levels of a kindergarten student through third grade. Books must be NEW.

How to Participate

Step 1: Purchase a new book or books appropriate for kids from kindergarten through third grade.

Step 2: Fill out the form on www.aaf.org/books and print it. Each individual donor from an organization must complete this form and enclose with each shipment of books. Be sure to include your club, college chapter or member organization name.

Step 3: By November 13, 2008, have your donation to Aimee Shultz.

If you'd like to make a monetary donation you can do that as well at www.aaf.org/books.

If you are interested in donating or helping pickup books, please let contact Aimee Shultz at aims385@yahoo.com. This is a community wide event, so get all of your non-member friends to donate a book too! (And this is also a national competition, so our club/community needs to step up and win this!) Feel free to set up collection stations at your office for your co-workers.

About Books for Kids

The Books for Kids Foundation provides books, creates children's libraries in underserved locations and participates in reading initiatives with community-based organizations. The majority of the organizations who receive books are public schools or day-care facilities, homeless shelters, after-school programs and community centers. Book donations for this drive will target nonprofit community-based organizations located across the country and in the AAF's 15 geographic districts. Visit www.booksforkidsfoundation.org for more information about the charity and its history.
